Orange Town Hires CBIZ for Accounting Services Amid Urgency

Orange Town has contracted the professional services firm CBIZ to manage its accounting responsibilities following the resignation of town accountant Amber Dupell. This decision comes as the town faces tight deadlines for closing its financial books, with state officials warning of potential aid withholding.

The Selectboard approved hiring CBIZ, which has a Greenfield office, as part of a strategic move to ensure the town’s financial operations remain uninterrupted. Dupell, who resigned effective August 21, will assist with the transition on a per diem basis at a rate of $45 per hour. She also participated in the selection committee that recommended CBIZ for the role.

During a recent Selectboard meeting, Town Administrator Matthew Fortier expressed confidence in the firm’s capabilities. “They screened very well with our committee,” he stated, noting the impressive knowledge and professionalism exhibited by CBIZ’s representatives. Fortier, along with Selectboard Chair Tom Smith and Dupell, comprised the screening committee that evaluated various candidates.

The committee also considered the municipal finance consulting firm Aponte & Aponte, described by Fortier as a father-and-son team. While acknowledging their qualifications, he emphasized that CBIZ, being a larger firm, would provide more extensive resources. The committee also reviewed applications from individuals seeking the accountant position but found none suitable for the role.

Fortier indicated that the urgency of the situation necessitated swift action. “We’re behind on closing the books. The state has already notified us that if we don’t have the books closed in the next three weeks, they’re going to start withholding state aid,” he explained. This pressure highlighted the need for a professional firm to manage the town’s financial records effectively.

CBIZ’s engagement will cost the town $94,000 annually, which is 10% more than the fee proposed by Aponte & Aponte. The contract will be reviewed each year to assess its continued relevance and effectiveness. CBIZ plans to operate remotely, with monthly visits to the Orange Town Hall.

According to CBIZ’s website, the firm boasts over 160 offices, approximately 10,000 team members, and a clientele of 135,000. This extensive network positions them well to handle the town’s accounting needs.

At the Selectboard meeting, members expressed gratitude to Dupell for her contributions during her tenure. Selectboard member Jane Peirce remarked on Dupell’s role in maintaining stability within the town’s financial operations. Following her departure, Dupell has taken a position as town accountant in Templeton, citing offers of higher pay and improved work-life balance as factors in her decision.

Reflecting on her experience in Orange, Dupell noted, “I’ve learned a lot and met a lot of great people.” Her insights highlight the challenges and rewards faced in public service roles, underscoring the importance of effective financial management in local government.

The transition to CBIZ marks a significant step for Orange Town as it seeks to stabilize its financial operations and meet state obligations. With the new firm poised to take over, the town aims to regain its footing in financial reporting and ensure accountability in its fiscal responsibilities.
