Kids Connect with Horses at Austin’s Camp Switch Willo

Austin’s Camp Switch Willo offers a unique opportunity for children to engage with horses while learning valuable life skills. Located in Texas, the camp focuses on hands-on experiences, allowing kids aged five to twelve to interact with horses and participate in various activities. Camp director Wendy Kratzer recently highlighted the camp’s offerings during a discussion with staff members Sierra Waggoner and Trevor Scott, alongside the camp’s beloved mini horse, Sugar Snap.

Kratzer explained that Camp Switch Willo is entirely horse-focused, boasting a herd of 99 horses on the property. Approximately half are involved in the camp and lesson programs, while the other half are part of the boarding initiative. This extensive setup not only provides children with direct access to horses but also ensures a variety of activities, including swimming, fostering a well-rounded camp experience.

The camp offers enrollment options for families, featuring a Spring Break Camp and a Summer Camp. Standard camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with additional flexibility available through morning care starting at 8 a.m. and extended care until 5 p.m.. Kratzer emphasized the camp’s commitment to convenience for parents, stating, “We want to make it helpful and convenient.”

Sugar Snap, the camp’s 19-year-old mini horse, plays a significant role in the campers’ experiences. Despite her age, she remains energetic and is trained for riding, equipped with her own saddle and bridle. Sugar Snap also has the ability to pull a cart and serves as the camp mascot. While she may be too small for older campers, children as young as three and four can ride her, creating memorable moments.

Kratzer noted the educational benefits of early exposure to horses. She explained that horses are sensitive and aware of their surroundings, which can help children connect with them on a deeper level. “When children pay attention to a horse’s body language, they learn about the animal’s thoughts and feelings,” she said. This connection helps to dispel fears and foster special relationships with these large animals.

The camp also teaches essential life lessons. Children learn responsibility through caring for the horses during sessions, with Sugar Snap often assisting in the process. The riding activities encourage empathy as campers build bonds with the animals, while overcoming initial fears instills bravery. “There’s a real sense of accomplishment for the kids when they connect with the horses,” Kratzer remarked.

With a background as a mental health therapist, Kratzer integrates her expertise into her work at the camp. “I’ve always loved working with people, and I really love kids,” she shared. Combining her passion for horses with her work has been a dream come true. The joy and excitement that children exhibit when they first meet the horses are truly unparalleled, she added.

As Camp Switch Willo prepares for its upcoming programs, the focus remains on providing a safe and engaging environment for children to learn, play, and develop meaningful connections with horses. The combination of skilled staff, ample activities, and the presence of friendly horses like Sugar Snap ensures a memorable experience for all campers.
