Lakewood native Stephen Knill is set to host “EC50: A Celebration of Eric Carmen’s Musical Legacy” on November 25, 2023, at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium. The event will honor the renowned musician and former frontman of The Raspberries, who passed away last year. This tribute show promises to take attendees on a nostalgic journey through Carmen’s most beloved songs.
Knill, a 1972 graduate of Lakewood High School, played bass on Carmen’s self-titled solo debut in 1975. The choice of venue holds special significance for him. “This is incredibly special and totally full circle,” he expressed during a call from his home near Raleigh, North Carolina. “I thought about other venues, but my sister suggested, ‘Why aren’t you doing it at your alma mater?’ It made perfect sense; I grew up in that auditorium.”
The show will feature members of Carmen’s solo-era band, alongside special guest vocalists and the Lakewood Project, a student rock orchestra. They will perform classic hits including “All by Myself,” “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” “Sunrise,” and “Hungry Eyes.”
Bringing a Vision to Life
Knill aims to recreate the experience of a concert that Carmen would have held in 2025, given “limitless resources.” He envisions a full orchestra performing at a venue with a seating capacity of 1,800. The Lakewood Project, consisting of 47 student musicians and an additional 11 alumni members from Lakewood High School Orchestra, has been rehearsing diligently for the event.
“The band was a bit skeptical until they heard the kids play,” Knill recalled with a laugh. “They are better than us.” The Lakewood Project, directed by Elizabeth A. Hankins, combines electric and acoustic strings, guitars, keyboards, and drums. This unique ensemble performs rock and classical music without a conductor, fostering a remarkable sense of unity among the musicians.
Hankins praised the students for their adaptability and confidence. “They possess a confidence that enables them to step into a professional setting and excel,” she noted. The blend of rock and classical elements makes them an ideal fit for collaborating with The Eric Carmen Band and special guests.
A Culmination of Dedication
For Hankins, the tribute show represents the culmination of her 36 years of teaching, celebrating music and community. “To see this vision come to life feels like a celebration of the countless students who have made this journey so meaningful,” she shared.
As the date approaches, excitement continues to build in the Lakewood community. The tribute show not only pays homage to Eric Carmen’s musical legacy but also highlights the talent and dedication of the students involved. For Knill, returning to his roots and giving back to the community through this event is a dream come true.
The tribute promises to be a memorable evening, filled with music and nostalgia, as the community comes together to honor a local legend.
