Steph Curry Celebrates Dell Curry’s Jersey Retirement March 19

The legacy of Dell Curry, former Charlotte Hornets player, will be honored on March 19, 2024, when the franchise retires his No. 30 jersey. His sons, Steph and Seth Curry, are set to attend the ceremony, making a quick trip to Charlotte after the Golden State Warriors face the Boston Celtics on March 18.

Dell Curry expressed his excitement about this milestone, stating it is a “dream come true.” The former athlete played for the Hornets for ten seasons and has remained a prominent figure in the organization as a television announcer for over a decade. He will become one of only two players, alongside Bobby Phills, to have their jerseys retired by the team.

“Special, special, special,” Steph Curry remarked about the occasion. He emphasized the significance of his father’s contributions to the team and the city, dubbing him “The Originator.” When the Hornets were established in 1988, Dell was part of the inaugural roster and remained a pivotal figure until his departure from the franchise in 1998.

Dell reflected on the honor, acknowledging the impact the game and its fans have had on his life. “I never imagined it would happen,” he told the Associated Press. He added, “It means so much to me. The game gave me so much, the fans gave me so much, and I want to stay involved just to give back what I can.”

His role as a television announcer has allowed him to connect with fans and share his basketball insights. He serves as a calming presence alongside his more energetic co-host, Eric Collins. Collins praised Dell’s lasting influence on the sport, highlighting a moment during an interview when a surprise video announcing the jersey retirement brought Dell to tears. “It’s rare you get to see that man share some tears, so it was pretty special,” Steph noted.

Dell’s records with the Hornets remain impressive, even years after his retirement. He holds the franchise records for the most games played (701), 2-point field goals (3,022), and personal fouls (1,357). He was also awarded the 1993-94 Sixth Man of the Year award, solidifying his place in Hornets history.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr endorsed Dell’s jersey retirement, emphasizing the importance of recognizing players who have made significant contributions to their franchises. “Dell’s one of those,” he stated, recalling the competitive nature of the Hornets during Dell’s playing days and the formidable teams he was part of.

As the jersey retirement date approaches, Dell will have the support of his family, including Steph, who confirmed their plans to attend the celebration. “Oh for sure, for sure,” he said when asked about joining the festivities.

The Hornets’ co-chairmen, Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, also acknowledged Dell’s impact on the organization and the community. They stated, “He exemplifies what it means to be a Hornet through his professionalism, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.”

As the Curry family prepares to honor Dell on this momentous occasion, the significance of his contributions to basketball and his enduring legacy in Charlotte will be celebrated by fans and fellow players alike.
