Bernie Kosar Remains Positive as He Waits for Liver Transplant

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar remains optimistic as he awaits a life-saving liver transplant. The 61-year-old football legend has undergone more than seven surgeries and spent over a week in the hospital at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. His scheduled transplant last weekend was postponed after medical staff discovered that the donor organ was infected.

In an update shared from his hospital room, Kosar reflected on the wisdom of his past coaches, including Howard Schnellenberger and Don Shula. He quoted them on the importance of approach to daily life, stating, “How you do little things is how you do all things.” He emphasized that each day offers a choice to improve or decline.

Kosar’s medical team is currently focused on managing internal bleeding, which has necessitated multiple surgical interventions. During his update, he displayed the medical equipment surrounding him, including several intravenous lines. “You can see all the IVs behind me. Left hand all really loaded up with a couple IVs and a midline. Getting ready to attack the day,” he said. While the bleeding appears to have slowed, the need for a liver transplant remains critical.

The former athlete has also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, adding complexity to his health situation. Nonetheless, Kosar remains committed to his recovery, aiming to inspire others in similar circumstances. He stated, “I wake up early and I make the conscious decision each and every day to be better, especially to all the people, families, and communities who we’re able to touch in the course of our day. You matter! Let’s all have a winning day.”

Support for Kosar has poured in from various quarters, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who expressed his admiration and encouragement. “Well Bernie we love you, and we just pray for you and hope you get better. You’ve given back so much to the Cleveland area and to Youngstown and really the whole world, and you’re someone who’s very, very special,” DeWine said.

As Kosar continues his battle, he exemplifies resilience and hope, encouraging others to prioritize their health and well-being. His journey underscores the importance of support and community in facing life’s challenges, particularly in the realm of health. While waiting for the transplant, Kosar’s fighting spirit serves as a beacon of hope for many.
