Loneliness UK, a charity initiative founded by Burnley resident Michael Helps, is leveraging the popular social media platform TikTok to address health anxiety and combat feelings of isolation among individuals of all ages. Originally established as a letter-writing service aimed at connecting elderly individuals with the wider community, the organization has evolved to incorporate modern methods of engagement.
The initiative began three years ago, encouraging people to write letters to seniors and share their daily experiences. Despite facing various challenges, Michael Helps remains committed to increasing awareness about loneliness, which he describes as a significant public health issue. He stated, “My journey with Loneliness UK has been challenging with many ups and downs but I still strive to make Loneliness UK a household name to support those in time of need.”
The organization recently expanded its outreach by creating a TikTok account, where Michael shares personal stories and insights on topics ranging from grief to health anxiety. In just three months, one of his videos garnered over 24,000 views and sparked 133 heartfelt comments from viewers across the UK. “When traveling across the UK, I have made a commitment to upload videos sharing different topics in the hope of reaching those who need someone to talk to and listen,” he explained.
Despite the shift towards digital platforms, Michael Helps still values traditional methods of communication. He believes that letter writing remains an effective way for older adults to connect with others. “We are still urging anyone who is suffering with loneliness to pick up a pen and paper and write to us and tell us about their day. This can be done online or by post; no one should ever feel alone. We are here to support and listen,” he added.
To sustain the free services provided by Loneliness UK, Michael has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover operational costs, stating, “Loneliness UK will never become a service that people who are suffering with loneliness will have to pay for.” He emphasizes that loneliness poses risks comparable to obesity or smoking, adversely affecting both physical and mental health, particularly among younger demographics.
Loneliness UK operates free of charge and is accessible to individuals of all ages. To participate, all one needs is a pen, paper, an envelope, and a stamp. For those interested in learning more or contributing, further information can be found on their website at https://www.lonelinessuk.com/.
