The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, along with local fire departments and law enforcement agencies, has successfully raised over $8,000 for breast cancer initiatives through the Pink Patch Project. This collaborative effort is part of an annual campaign held each October to enhance awareness of breast cancer and support related research and services within Nevada County.
Throughout October 2023, personnel from various departments, including the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and the Grass Valley Police Department, wore distinctive pink patches on their uniforms. They also sold themed merchandise, including pink patches, challenge coins, and apparel, with all proceeds directed toward local health foundations. According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office’s official post, a total of $8,439 was collected to aid breast cancer programs, with the majority of funds allocated to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation (SNMHF) and a smaller portion benefiting the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation (TFHSF).
Community Engagement and Events
The Pink Patch Project included various events aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer. Notable activities featured the Pink Patch Pickleball Tournament, Heroes Night at Nevada Union High School, and local Halloween festivities. A standout moment was the charity drawing for a Pink Patch shadow box, which showcased challenge coins from the past five years, as well as patches from all seven agencies involved. The winner of this year’s drawing was Kelli McDaniel.
On Wednesday, Sheriff Shannan Moon presented a life-size check to SNMHF, expressing gratitude to the hospital staff for their ongoing support. Beyond fundraising, the Pink Patch Project has positively impacted both law enforcement families and the broader Nevada County community.
Future Initiatives and Support
Looking ahead, the next breast cancer challenge coin contest is scheduled for late spring 2026, and Pink Patch Project activities are set to return in October. The sheriff’s office encourages community members who wish to contribute to donate directly to the TFHSF and SNMHF.
This initiative not only underscores the importance of community collaboration but also highlights the ongoing efforts to combat breast cancer through awareness and support.
