Walgreens Issues Nationwide Recall of Nasal Spray Over Bacteria Risk

More than 41,000 bottles of Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray With Xylitol are being recalled due to potential bacterial contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recall, which affects the 1.5-ounce variety, was announced in a notice published on November 21, 2023.

The FDA upgraded the recall classification after determining that the nasal spray contained a microorganism, specifically Pseudomonas lactis, which poses health risks. The recall was initiated by Medical Products Laboratories, a company based in Philadelphia, which stated that the contamination was linked to the product’s non-sterile manufacturing process.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pseudomonas bacteria are commonly found in the environment, particularly in water and soil. While these bacteria can be harmless in healthy individuals, they can lead to serious infections in those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

Consumers are advised to check their medicine cabinets for the affected nasal spray and to discontinue use immediately. The FDA encourages anyone who has purchased the product to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

The recall highlights ongoing concerns regarding product safety and the importance of stringent manufacturing practices in the health care industry. Affected consumers should remain vigilant and report any adverse reactions to their health care provider.

As the situation develops, further updates will be provided by the FDA and the company involved. Health officials emphasize that public awareness is crucial to ensuring consumer safety and preventing potential health risks associated with contaminated products.
