The Torlonia Foundation, renowned for housing the world’s most significant private collection of ancient Roman sculpture, will showcase its masterpieces in the United States for the first time. The exhibition, titled Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection, will feature an array of remarkable works, including intricate portrait busts, grand figures of deities, and elaborately designed sarcophagi.
This extraordinary collection encompasses over 600 works and represents three centuries of antiquities heritage. Previously displayed at the Torlonia Museum in Rome, the museum has been closed since the onset of World War II, limiting public access to these stunning artworks until 2020. The upcoming exhibition will present 58 highlights from the Torlonia Collection, including 24 newly restored pieces that have not been exhibited in nearly a century.
A Journey Through Ancient Roman Artistry
The sculptures on display date from approximately the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD, with a significant concentration of works originating from the High Imperial period during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. This era marked the pinnacle of artistic innovation in ancient Rome, showcasing the skill and creativity of its artists.
The preservation and study of the Torlonia Collection have been supported by Bvlgari through the Laboratori Torlonia, ensuring that these historical treasures are meticulously cared for. Additionally, the Torlonia Foundation’s programming is made possible with the backing of Chiomenti, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind this landmark exhibition.
Co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Torlonia Foundation, the exhibition also collaborates with the Kimbell Art Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and The Museum Box. This partnership allows American audiences to engage with one of the most significant collections of ancient Roman sculpture ever assembled, offering a rare opportunity to witness the majestic artistry of this historical period.
Access to Artistic Heritage
The Torlonia Collection stands as a testament to the rich cultural legacy of ancient Rome, and its upcoming presentation in the U.S. not only highlights the artistic achievements of that time but also provides an invaluable educational experience for visitors. The exhibition promises to captivate audiences with its blend of intimate and monumental works, reflecting the grandeur of Roman civilization.
As anticipation builds for Myth and Marble, art enthusiasts and history buffs alike eagerly await the chance to explore the depth and beauty of ancient Roman sculpture, marking a significant moment in the cultural landscape of the United States.
