Community Mourns Passing of Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes

Ruby Carole Bare Britt Hayes, a beloved member of her community, passed away on November 22, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on April 17, 1937, in Ashe County, North Carolina, to Arvil and Myrtle Phyllis Bare. Her legacy is carried on by her family and friends, who remember her warm spirit and dedication to service.

Ruby was predeceased by her parents, an older brother, Clay Delano Bare, and her son, Daniel Britt. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Dr. Steven Hayes, daughter Cythina (Marty) Ferguson of Cary, North Carolina, and three grandchildren: Reese and Bennett Ferguson, and Jeb Britt. Additionally, she leaves behind a stepdaughter, Stephanie Richards, and a stepson, Brian Hayes, along with their families.

Throughout her life, Ruby made significant contributions to her community. She graduated from Elizabethton High School and initially trained as a medical laboratory technician at Carter County Hospital. Later, she specialized as an X-ray technician, working at various urgent care facilities in the Tri-Cities and Greeneville regions. Her professional skills were matched by her personal qualities; she was known for her kindness, generosity, and infectious smile.

A Life of Service and Passion

Ruby was not only a dedicated professional but also an accomplished homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and creating Halloween costumes, showcasing a talent for making designer-quality clothing. Her involvement in the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton spanned over 60 years, where she participated in the church choir and worked with preschool children.

In her free time, Ruby loved hiking, traveling, and gardening. She cherished moments spent with friends and family, embracing life until her final weeks. Her ability to bring joy and warmth to those around her created lasting memories for many.

A celebration of Ruby’s life is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton. The service will be officiated by Reverend Mark McFadden and Reverend Raymond Amos Sr., with music provided by Mrs. Debbie Gouge, Mr. David Arney, and Mrs. Susan Heaton. Family and friends are invited to gather from 12 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Following the service, a graveside ceremony will be held at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be chosen from family and friends, while honorary pallbearers will include John Britt, David Kelly, and Terry Bare.
