Food Prices Soar in Gaza Amid Rising US-Israel-Iran Tensions

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has intensified suffering for residents of Gaza, Palestine. In recent days, food prices have surged sharply, while access to basic necessities has dwindled. The escalating tensions have led to the closure of border crossings, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

As the situation deteriorates, Gazans are flocking to local markets in search of essential items that remain available. Many families express concern that the food currently on store shelves may disappear by the next day. According to a report by Al Jazeera, the effects of the escalating conflict are being felt immediately in the daily lives of residents. Local citizens and merchants report an alarming pace of price increases. Some essential items are becoming scarce, while others are no longer found in local markets.

The supply of food is rapidly diminishing as access at border crossings becomes increasingly restricted. Nearly all basic needs in Gaza, including food, fuel, medications, and other essential goods, are transported through trucks from Israel and Egypt. When crossings are closed or their capacity is limited, the immediate repercussions are felt in markets, hospitals, and clean water services.

On February 28, 2024, Israel shut down the crossings into Gaza following military actions against Iran, halting humanitarian aid and impacting the evacuation of patients needing medical care outside of the territory. Although the Kerem Shalom Crossing—referred to as Karem Abu Salem by Palestinians—was later reopened on a limited basis to allow a gradual influx of aid, access remains severely restricted. Meanwhile, the Rafah Crossing with Egypt is still closed, compounding the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations.

Aid agencies have stated that the current volume of assistance entering Gaza is far from adequate to meet the urgent needs of the population. The lack of access to food and essential supplies is creating an increasingly dire situation for families who are already living in precarious conditions. As the conflict continues to escalate, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is expected to worsen, with many fearing for their livelihoods and well-being.
