A fifth-grade teacher from Cadillac, Michigan, has been recognized for his impactful teaching methods with the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award. Brandon Bailey, who teaches at Forest View Elementary, was honored for his hands-on approach to education, strong relationships with students, and overall positive classroom environment. As part of this accolade, he received a $2,000 cash prize and is now eligible for the $10,000 Educator of the Year award at the end of the academic year.
The Excellence in Education awards were established by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to celebrate outstanding public school teachers throughout the state. Bailey has dedicated 21 years to education, with the last eight years spent at Forest View, where he teaches math and science.
Building Connections in the Classroom
Bailey credits his passion for teaching to his desire to inspire a love of learning in his students through active participation. “I love to teach. I am passionate about it. I found it to be very rewarding to pass on the love of learning to someone else,” he said. He emphasized the importance of engaging students through a hands-on approach, stating, “When the student is involved, they learn.”
His nomination came from Heidi Collins, the mother of a former student, who highlighted Bailey’s ability to build trust with students and foster a supportive learning environment. “Mr. Bailey goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character, social skills, and emotional development,” Collins noted.
Bailey expressed gratitude for Collins’ recognition, particularly because it reflected the connection he formed with her son, who joined his class later in the school year. “We talked about fishing all the time. We talked about his activities — he’s into hockey. It resonated with his mom, so she nominated me,” Bailey explained.
Recognition from Peers and Administrators
The principal of Forest View Elementary, Jake Wing, praised Bailey, stating that the award is a testament to the daily efforts of educators that often go unnoticed. “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see. It’s nice for him to get this recognition,” Wing remarked.
Jennifer Brown, the superintendent of Cadillac Area Public Schools, emphasized Bailey’s significant impact on both student achievement and classroom culture. “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental. It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work, intentional planning, and a relentless focus on rigorous learning,” Brown said, adding that Bailey’s commitment enhances the entire district.
Bailey earned his bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. Beyond his teaching role, he also serves as the high school girls golf coach. His recognition as a nominee for the Excellence in Education award is based on several criteria, including excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement.
