Man Honors Father’s Christmas Spirit with Dazzling Display

Timothy Newsome has taken on the cherished holiday tradition of decorating his yard in Westlake, Louisiana, in tribute to his late father, Eddie JLP Newsome. This year, he has transformed his garden into a festive display featuring over 8,000 light bulbs and hundreds of decorations, a task that once belonged to his father.

The tradition began decades ago, with Eddie delighting in creating the brightest Christmas display on their block. “My dad started this tradition many years before I was born,” Timothy recalled. “He first began decorating at the end of Patin Road in Westlake, later moving to the corner of Garden and Carlin, where I grew up.” Eddie’s passion for Christmas was evident in the elaborate decorations, earning praise from neighbors and visitors alike.

Timothy remembers the joy of decorating alongside his father and siblings, feeling the magic of the season come alive each year. “Even in his last Christmas with us, Dad was outside helping me decorate my yard,” he said. The family lost Eddie on May 5, 2024, and Timothy vowed to carry on this beloved tradition.

Setting up the display, which Timothy affectionately calls “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” requires about two weeks of dedicated work. This year, his display includes 256 stake nails, 253 plastic figurines, 233 extension cords, and much more. “I try to reorganize the sets differently each year,” he explained, adding new elements to keep the tradition fresh.

Timothy has also included a special tribute to his father by leaving an empty chair in the yard. “I know he’s still there with me,” he said, emphasizing the bond they shared through this festive activity. “This was something that was so special between me and my dad.”

In addition to his personal efforts, Timothy’s neighbors have joined in the festive spirit, allowing him to extend his display into their yards. The collaboration has created a community atmosphere that enhances the joy of the season. “I love all the sweet comments and compliments from people who enjoy the lights each year,” he said.

The display is not just a tribute but a way to foster connections with those who pass by. Timothy hopes that the joy and memories tied to the Christmas lights will continue to inspire future generations, just as they did for him and his father.
