Mullets Steal the Show at Pennsylvania’s Annual Hair Contest

The annual Mullet Contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show attracted a vibrant crowd on January 8, 2024, as participants of all ages showcased their unique hairstyles. Held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, the event saw hundreds eager to compete for the coveted championship title.

Participants brought their A-game, with many donning themed outfits to complement their meticulously styled mullets. Judge and sponsor Brittany Goldberg noted the creativity on display, stating, “People come in their outfits. They spice up the mullets for this event, so they really show up. They put out their best hair.” According to Goldberg, the defining qualities of a winning mullet include not just length, but also style, flair, accessories, presentation, and a commitment to the craft.

Among the standout competitors was Drew Fleschut, a ten-year-old from Dallas, Pennsylvania, who took home the overall winner’s title. Dressed in a red-and-black plaid shirt to emulate the character Joe Dirt, Drew expressed his surprise at winning. “It was crazy. I didn’t think I was going to win the competition. I’ve been growing my hair out for two-and-a-half years, and I didn’t really want to do a mullet, but now I do,” he said.

Another notable winner was Kiernan, who participated alongside his father, Pat. The duo has been competing together for three years, and Kiernan’s dedication to his hairstyle has been evident over the past four years. “It was a great time. He got first place this year and has been growing this mullet for four years now. He absolutely loves it. Anytime we go to the barber, he always says ‘don’t cut it off,'” Pat shared. They even incorporated an American flag into Kiernan’s look to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The Mullet Contest continues to be a highlight of the Pennsylvania Farm Show, drawing participants from various backgrounds and ages. The enthusiastic atmosphere and creative expressions of style reflect the event’s popularity, making it a beloved tradition in the community. As competitors prepare for next year’s contest, many are already contemplating how to outdo themselves in a celebration of this distinctive hairstyle.
