On November 22, 2023, officers from various units of the NYPD gathered in Williamsburg’s 90th Precinct to distribute food to families in need, marking the first annual Thanksgiving food drive in the area. Members of the Detectives Endowment Association, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, and the NYPD’s Hispanic Society came together to provide 400 turkeys to local residents, demonstrating their commitment to community support.
Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This is to show that our Detectives care about the communities they work in and they want to give back to these people. There are a lot of people in need right now, and we want to ease that burden for them.” His words reflect a broader mission to connect with the community and provide assistance during the holiday season.
Strengthening Community Bonds
Retired Detective and NYPD Chaplain Barbara Williams echoed Munro’s sentiments, highlighting the event’s role in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community. “This helps to bridge the gap between community and us. We are all one family; we want these people to know we go through the same struggles that they go through despite us wearing a blue uniform,” she remarked.
The event drew many grateful recipients who expressed their appreciation for the support. Shari Owens, who received a turkey, shared her personal story, saying, “This time last year, I had two heart attacks and I flatlined twice while at the hospital. I am thankful for the gift of life this year. This year I am getting my niece a turkey. We have to help one another out during these difficult times.”
Another recipient, Carlos DeJesus, reflected on the meaning of Thanksgiving, stating, “Thanksgiving is a lot about giving back and being thankful. I have a lot to be thankful for this year. My wife beat cancer and my daughter lived through a bad car accident. I am thankful for life and health. If a turkey brings us together, that’s all I can ask for.”
Community Impact and Future Initiatives
The food drive not only provided immediate relief but also fostered a spirit of gratitude and connection among participants. Officers took the opportunity to engage with families, reinforcing the NYPD’s focus on community-oriented policing.
As the NYPD looks to continue its outreach efforts, events like this food drive serve as a reminder of the importance of community support, especially during the holiday season. The enthusiasm and participation from both the officers and the residents signify a hopeful step toward stronger relationships and collective resilience.
This initiative is just one example of how law enforcement can actively contribute to the well-being of the communities they serve, demonstrating that they are not merely enforcers of the law but also partners in addressing the social needs of their neighborhoods.
