Arlington Mourns Elzie Odom, Pioneering First Black Mayor

Elzie Odom, the first Black mayor of Arlington, Texas, passed away at the age of 96, as confirmed by his family on November 17, 2025. During his time on the City Council, Odom dedicated seven years to public service before making history as Arlington’s first Black mayor. He won the mayoral race against fellow council member Paula Hightower. Odom’s tenure as mayor lasted six years, during which he played a crucial role in retaining General Motors’ plant in Arlington, facilitating the arrival of the Dallas Cowboys, and securing the Texas Rangers’ future in the city, known as the American Dream City.

Even after leaving office, Odom remained active in the community, continuing his service through the Mount Olive Baptist Church. His wife, Ruby Odom, expressed profound admiration for her husband, stating, “We built a life together rooted in Christ, service, and gratitude.” She emphasized his love for Arlington and his dedication to his family and God, saying, “I am comforted by the memories we shared and by the legacy he leaves — a legacy of kindness, leadership, and a belief that every person deserves dignity and respect.”
