Senator Warnock Welcomes Monks on 2,300-Mile Peace Walk to D.C.

U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) recently welcomed nearly two dozen Buddhist monks in Decatur, Georgia, as they paused during their ambitious 2,300-mile journey from Texas to Washington, D.C. The monks are undertaking this walk to advocate for peace and unity, demonstrating their commitment to promoting non-violence and understanding across communities.

During the monks’ visit, Senator Warnock expressed admiration for their dedication to putting faith into action. He drew parallels between the monks’ mission and the teachings of the late Martin Luther King Jr., who served as co-pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Warnock currently serves as Senior Pastor. “These monks understand, as did Georgia’s greatest son, Martin Luther King, Jr., that it’s not simply enough to pray for peace with our lips,” Warnock stated. “We must pray with our legs. We have to put our faith into action.”

In his address, Warnock also recognized the journey’s challenges, particularly for one of the monks, Venerable Phra-Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan. A Georgia resident, Phommasan suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a car earlier in the walk, resulting in the amputation of his leg. “We are especially keeping Venerable Phra-Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan in our prayers while he recovers at home in Snellville,” Warnock added. “He is a son of Georgia, and we pray for his continual healing and peace.”

Senator Warnock, who has held his pastoral role at the historic church since 2005, emphasized that his ministry extends beyond the church’s walls. He has been a vocal advocate for community engagement, often intertwining prayer with activism and social justice efforts. His leadership style reflects a commitment to service that resonates with the values shared by the monks on their peace walk.

As the monks continue their journey, they aim to inspire people from all walks of life to engage in dialogue and actions that foster harmony. Their trek not only highlights the need for peace but also serves as a reminder of the collective efforts required to address the challenges faced by communities today.

In a world increasingly divided, events like this serve as vital opportunities for reflection and action. The monks’ message of peace, coupled with Senator Warnock’s call to action, underscores a shared responsibility to promote unity and understanding.
