Boston University (BU) has unveiled a new campaign titled “You Are Why,” aimed at emphasizing the essential role of research, teaching, and the humanities in fostering a more engaged and compassionate society. The initiative seeks to build partnerships that support BU’s mission to enhance the everyday lives of individuals in Boston, nationally, and globally.
In her letter to the BU community dated September 26, 2023, BU President Melissa Gilliam articulated the campaign’s primary goal: to engage with supporters and collaborate with elected officials and new partners in addressing significant societal challenges. The campaign highlights various impactful projects, including advancements such as a bionic pancreas that aids those with type 1 diabetes and scholarships for exceptional students from Boston Public Schools. These efforts underscore BU’s commitment to research that tackles generational issues.
In her letter, Gilliam outlined the pressing challenges facing higher education, including evolving technology, constrained research budgets, and diminishing public trust. She emphasized that these challenges are not mere obstacles for institutions but affect the communities they serve. She stated, “These hurdles call on us to adapt to better address a changing world.”
Emphasizing Collaboration and Innovation
Boston University believes in the power of collaboration, asserting that unity fosters strength. Gilliam noted, “Our work is shaped by the needs and hopes of those we serve—and guided by the conviction that education and discovery should benefit society.” The initiative aims to spotlight how research and discoveries at BU have been made possible through federal and philanthropic partnerships.

Gilliam highlighted that progress in areas such as treatment advancements for Parkinson’s disease and support for student career paths relies on this collaborative spirit.
