Aerial_Knight Games has released its third title, Aerial_Knight’s DropShot, which debuts on February 17, 2024, for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. The game marks a shift from the developer’s previous focus on freerunning in the Never Yield series, venturing into the territory of aerial shooters. While DropShot combines a unique aesthetic with engaging gameplay, it presents challenges that may leave players pondering their performance.
In DropShot, players navigate through 50 levels where they eliminate opponents while freefalling from a plane. This concept draws on the popularity of freefall mechanics seen in titles like God of War 3 and Dead Space 2, as well as modern battle royale games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends. Players use finger guns to shoot targets, with the option to punch enemies at close range. While the primary goal is to reach the drop zone, players are encouraged to maximize their score by shooting as many targets as possible, managing their limited ammunition, and racing against the clock.
The game’s mechanics require players to adapt quickly. With only up to 10 bullets, which can be replenished by attacking balloons, and no aiming assistance, precision is key. A clear line of sight is essential for successful shots, and players cannot easily turn around to retry missed shots. Obstacles, such as crashing into fields and slipstreams, add a layer of complexity. Players must master their rhythm during descent, making the gameplay experience both thrilling and demanding.
Throughout DropShot, the aesthetic and sound design stand out. The visuals evoke a nostalgic charm reminiscent of PlayStation 1 and 2 games, reflecting the creative vision of director Neil Jones. The game’s protagonist, Smoke Wallace, gains his finger-gun powers after an encounter with a radioactive dragon, providing a whimsical backstory that aligns with the game’s playful tone.
The soundtrack, composed by Daniel Wilkins, enhances the gaming experience, setting the mood for the adrenaline-fueled gameplay. Tragically, Wilkins passed away in 2024, making this his final project. The collaboration between Jones and Wilkins has been longstanding, with Wilkins previously contributing to the music of Never Yield. A tribute to Wilkins is included at the end of the game, underscoring the personal significance of DropShot for the studio.
Despite some inconsistencies in gameplay, particularly in scoring mechanics and the pacing of certain race segments, Aerial_Knight’s DropShot successfully captures player engagement. The game encourages a sense of enthusiasm, allowing players to enjoy the unique freefall combat experience. As the studio’s most personal title to date, DropShot showcases a combination of nostalgic charm and innovative gameplay that invites players into a vibrant world of airborne action.
