Classical Triumphs Over English in Thrilling Powderpuff Showdown

Lynn Classical secured a dramatic 19-12 victory over Lynn English in the annual powderpuff football game held at Manning Field on November 5, 2023. The game showcased talent and tenacity from both teams, culminating in a thrilling finish that delighted fans gathered with signs and blankets.

Classical coach Rod Valrie expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. “It’s all about being part of a team,” Valrie remarked. “They all gained a lot and learned a lot. I’m glad we were able to get a ‘W’ today and finish strong.” This victory marks the fourth consecutive win for Classical in the powderpuff series.

Game Highlights and Turning Points

The match began with a lively atmosphere as Bridget Toomey performed the national anthem on her electric guitar. The Lady Rams quickly took control, with Azriella Jorge scoring the first touchdown on a remarkable 55-yard run down the right sideline. A successful extra-point attempt by McKenna Duncan put Classical ahead 7-0.

Jorge continued to shine, adding another touchdown in the second quarter to extend the lead to 13-0. Despite a strong effort from English, including a notable run by Maddy McHale, the Lady Bulldogs could not score before halftime.

As the second half unfolded, English made adjustments that paid off. Quarterback Dayana Hios Edwards connected with Jayleen Novas-Rivera for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, showcasing a dynamic passing game. Despite this resurgence, Classical’s Bianca Christalin scored a rushing touchdown, keeping the Rams ahead at 19-12.

Coaches Reflect on Performance

Coach Madison Molea of English was pleased with her team’s determination. “I think everyone had a lot of fun today. We had our lowest numbers, so the 23 players playing for us played hard,” she stated. Molea acknowledged the back-and-forth nature of the game, highlighting the resilience shown by her team.

In a pivotal moment, English had a chance to tie the game with only 20 seconds remaining, but time expired before they could complete their drive. Key contributions from Classical players like Suri Reyes, Aysia Olaes, and Brooke Braswell proved crucial in securing the victory.

Valrie praised Jorge and Christalin, playfully nicknaming them “Flash and Dash” for their speed on the field. “Once they get to the outside, it’s tough to catch them,” he noted, emphasizing their impact on the game.

After the final whistle, players exchanged handshakes, and Classical celebrated with their trophy. The attention now shifts to the upcoming Thanksgiving football game, set for 10 a.m. on November 9, 2023, also at Manning Field, promising another exciting matchup for the local teams.
