Cowgirls Prepare for Road Test Against Tarleton State on Sunday

After a nine-day break, the McNeese State Cowgirls will return to competition as they face Tarleton State in a nonconference matchup on November 16, 2025. The game is set to begin at 14:00 in Stephenville, Texas. Under the guidance of new head coach Ayla Guzzardo, the Cowgirls enter the contest with a record of 1-1.

Excitement Builds for the Upcoming Challenge

Coach Guzzardo expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming game, noting, “We are excited to get back on the court and play a team like us. This will be a good test to see where we are at.” She emphasized the importance of the challenge, highlighting that Tarleton State is a commendable Mid-Major program that plays a style similar to her team.

Tarleton State comes into the game with a record of 2-2, having recently lost to Texas A&M with a score of 79-64. Despite an early 11-point lead in that game, the Texans could not maintain their advantage. This matchup will mark their third home game of the season.

As the Cowgirls prepare for the contest, Guzzardo reflected on the significance of tough games in building team resilience. “We need these tough games to get us ready for our league, especially on the road,” she stated. The Cowgirls, who feature a roster with several young players, aim to gain valuable experience that will serve them well in the upcoming Southland Conference play.

Recent Performance and Team Development

The Cowgirls are coming off a loss against Alabama on November 6, where they showcased strong defensive skills and held a halftime lead. Guzzardo remarked, “I’m not disappointed with how we played. I know we lost the game, but I think we won the fight. We are not big, but we are tough.” Throughout the past week, the team has focused on refining their skills and building confidence.

Three players from the Cowgirls are currently averaging double figures in scoring, led by senior Arianna Patton, who contributes an average of 12 points per game. Freshman Dakota Howard follows closely with 11.5 points, while Tyreona Sibley adds 10.5 points per game. The coaching staff is working on strategies to enhance offensive play, particularly in attacking larger opponents and navigating zone defenses. “Trying to spread our offense more… we want to work on getting the ball inside and kicking it out,” Guzzardo explained.

On the opposing side, Tarleton State features three players also scoring in double figures, including Gia Adams and Shadasia Brackens, each averaging 12.3 points per game. Brackens leads her team in rebounding with an average of 8.3 boards per game, while Kyriana Jones rounds out the double-digit scorers with 12 points. Guzzardo noted the balance and teamwork displayed by the Texans, stating, “They are a very good team that is very balanced and shares the basketball.”

Following this matchup, the Cowgirls will return home to face LSU-Alexandria on November 25, 2025. The upcoming game against Tarleton State serves as an essential benchmark for McNeese State as they continue to develop their game ahead of league play.
