Jaxson Dart has been cleared from concussion protocol and is expected to return as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants in their upcoming game against the New England Patriots on December 4, 2023. The Giants announced this development on Thursday, indicating that Dart’s recovery will allow him to take the field after missing the previous two games due to a concussion sustained during the Week 10 matchup against the Chicago Bears.
With Dart sidelined, the Giants struggled, suffering defeats to the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions. In those games, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston stepped in, completing 37 of 65 passes for 567 yards, securing two touchdowns but also throwing two interceptions. Additionally, Winston contributed with a rushing touchdown and a receiving score. The Giants currently hold a record of 2-10 and are on a six-game losing streak, effectively eliminating them from playoff contention.
As Dart prepares to return, questions arise regarding the coaching staff’s approach to his style of play, particularly concerning his running ability. The first-round pick in the 2025 draft has undergone concussion evaluations four times this season, including during preseason. Under the previous regime of coach Brian Daboll, Dart was known for leading the league in designed quarterback runs. Following Daboll’s departure, interim coach Mike Kafka is expected to adopt a more cautious strategy to mitigate the risk of further injuries. This may result in fewer designed runs, especially in high-pressure situations.
Before his injury, Dart demonstrated impressive performance metrics, completing 62.7% of his passes for 1,417 yards along with ten touchdowns and three interceptions across nine games, seven of which he started. He also tallied 317 rushing yards on 57 carries, contributing another seven touchdowns.
Injuries continue to be a concern for the Giants beyond the quarterback position. Although the team did not hold a formal practice on Thursday, they released estimated participation statuses. Dart is projected to be a full participant, while All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is listed as a projected did not participate (DNP) due to an aggravated elbow injury. Linebackers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles are also expected to miss practice, dealing with shoulder and neck/knee issues, respectively.
As the Giants prepare for their game against the Patriots, the focus will not only be on Dart’s performance but also on how the team adjusts its strategy to maximize his effectiveness while minimizing injury risks.
