The PIAA Wrestling Championships are set to take place from March 7 to March 9, 2024, at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This prestigious event will showcase some of the best high school wrestling talent in the state, with several competitors from the Lehigh Valley area aiming for glory.
Among the notable wrestlers is Keanu Dillard from Bethlehem Catholic, who is competing in the Class 3A 133-pound weight class. Dillard is on the verge of making history by potentially becoming only the second wrestler from District 11 to win four state titles, a feat first accomplished by Matt Gerhard of Catasauqua in 1984. Dillard’s journey has been well documented, highlighting his dedication and focus on achieving this milestone.
Another athlete to watch is Adam Waters from Faith Christian, who will wrestle at 189 pounds in the Class 2A division. Waters aims to join the ranks of four-time state champions, adding to the excitement surrounding the competition. His story reflects perseverance, particularly following a challenging start to his wrestling career.
The rich history of wrestling in the Lehigh Valley is noteworthy. Northampton has maintained a remarkable streak, producing a state medalist each year since 1984, marking the longest such streak in PIAA history. Similarly, Nazareth has seen at least one state medalist annually since 1987, except for one year in 2003.
Bethlehem Catholic has also demonstrated consistent success, securing at least one state champion every year since 2012. The program’s legacy is further highlighted by its state finalists each year since 2010. On the other hand, Emmaus continues to seek its second state champion, having produced only one in its history, Bryan Reiss, in 2005.
In an impressive display of skill, Luke Fugazzotto from Northwestern Lehigh has risen to fourth place on the state’s career pins list, achieving a total of 122 falls. This puts him ahead of notable wrestlers such as Jaret Lane, who graduated from Southern Columbia in 2018.
As the championships unfold, several area wrestlers will be competing with significant career milestones. Five wrestlers from the region boast over 90 career wins, including Gavyn Kelton and Jack Jasionowicz, both with 98 wins each. Brock Frable (97 wins), Kurtis Crossman (93), and David Clayton (92) also represent their schools with impressive records.
The event will not only highlight individual achievements but also the broader impact of high school wrestling in the Lehigh Valley. Teams like Southern Lehigh and Pleasant Valley are striving to break their medal droughts, with Southern Lehigh last achieving a medal in 2015 and Pleasant Valley since 2012.
The excitement builds as the championships approach, with predictions for each weight class already circulating among fans and analysts. Wrestlers are preparing for intense competition, and the outcomes will shape the legacy of wrestling in the Lehigh Valley for years to come.
As the weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on the mats in Hershey, where the best of the best will battle for state titles and the chance to etch their names into the annals of wrestling history.
