New Era for Scotland Basketball as Jarvis Cobb Takes Charge

The Scotland High School basketball program is set to embark on a new chapter as Jarvis Cobb begins his tenure as the varsity boys basketball coach. With the season opener just four days away, Cobb aims to revitalize a team that has recorded a disappointing 15-34 record over the past two years. Under his leadership, the Fighting Scots are expected to adopt a fast-paced and disciplined style of play, positioning themselves as a formidable competitor in the league.

Cobb’s coaching philosophy emphasizes athleticism and resilience. He stated, “This will be their first time with me as head coach, and we’re going to be athletic, fast and make the opposing team uncomfortable. We want to score in transition and do things the right way.” His approach seeks not only to enhance the team’s performance but also to instill a sense of camaraderie among the players.

With the departure of standout athletes Dajuan Gibson, Quatavius Everette, and Jerrison Dixon, the team must now rely on a new generation of talent. Players such as Maddox McNickle, Nasiah McLean, Nazire Campbell, Carter Williams, Tomek McFadden, and Javeer Pasley will step up to fill the void. Cobb believes that once the team settles into their roles, they will become a formidable force.

“Once we get everybody settled in, we’re going to be scary,” said Maddox McNickle, a sophomore guard. “We expect to win the conference with the new brand of basketball we’re implementing. It is a brotherhood, which is something you love to not only hear but also to be a part of.”

The team has adopted the motto “do what we do,” which encapsulates their commitment to fighting hard, remaining resilient, and playing until the final buzzer. Cobb emphasized the importance of nurturing a supportive environment, noting, “Every team I have coached has been resilient, no matter what happens around us. Whenever we meet adversity, we will pick each other up.”

The Fighting Scots will kick off their season on December 2, 2023, at home against St. Paul’s High School at 19:30. The community is eager to see how Cobb’s leadership and the new roster will transform the program, as they look to regain their competitive edge and foster a sense of pride in Scotland County basketball.
