The historic college football rivalry between the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers and the Union College Garnet Chargers will be reignited on March 15, 2024, marking the 75th edition of the Dutchman’s Shoes Game. This matchup, rooted in tradition since 1883, represents one of the longest-running rivalries in American college football.
In 1950, the rivalry was formalized with the introduction of the Dutchman’s Shoes trophy, awarded to the annual winner. RPI head coach Ralph Isernia emphasized the significance of this matchup, stating, “When you see it on the schedule, that’s one that you circle every single year.” The game embodies not only athletic competition but also mutual respect between the teams.
The Garnet Chargers currently lead the all-time series with a record of 84 wins, 33 losses, and 4 ties. Last year, RPI triumphed over Union with a score of 24-7, but this year’s contest carries even greater stakes for both programs. Each team is enjoying successful seasons, currently standing at 7-2 overall.
High Stakes in the Liberty League
Union College boasts an impressive Liberty League record of 6-0, while RPI follows closely with a 5-1 mark in conference play. A victory for the Garnet Chargers on Saturday would secure them the Liberty League title and a coveted spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Conversely, if the Engineers claim victory, the outcome of the game between Ithaca and Cortland will become crucial. An RPI win paired with a Cortland victory would elevate the Engineers to the top of the conference standings and lock in their playoff berth.
The intensity of the rivalry is amplified by the potential for postseason implications. Coach Jon Drach of Union highlighted the importance of discipline and resilience, stating, “I don’t think they’re going to back down to anything. They’re going to continue to raise their level of play.” He added, “Pressure is a privilege… and our guys don’t feel that. They fall back on their execution.”
For RPI, the team is focused on executing their game plan effectively, especially following a challenging loss to Ithaca. Coach Isernia believes that this setback can serve as a valuable learning experience. “I think it (was) a good lesson for us to focus on our technique, focus on the call, focus on doing the play right, regardless if it’s offense, defense, or special teams,” he remarked.
Anticipation Builds for Saturday’s Clash
Both teams are eager for the opportunity to secure a conference title and advance to the playoffs. Union College will host the game at 13:00 local time, and the anticipation is palpable among players and fans alike. Drach noted, “I think you could roll the football in the parking lot right now and be ready to go.”
As the kickoff approaches, the atmosphere surrounding this historic rivalry continues to build, promising an exciting showdown that honors the legacy of college football in New York. The Dutchman’s Shoes Game is not just another match; it’s a celebration of tradition, competition, and the spirit of college athletics.
