The Tennessee Titans have added a notable figure to their search for a new head coach. The team plans to interview former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, as reported by ESPN insider Adam Schefter. Garrett, who will turn 60 in March, last held a coaching position in the NFL in 2021 and has since transitioned to a role as a broadcast analyst for NBC Sports.
Garrett’s coaching career began after his time as a player, where he experienced a unique journey. Undrafted in 1989, he signed with the New Orleans Saints but did not make the final roster. He subsequently played for the San Antonio Riders in the World League of American Football and the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League that same year. In 1992, he joined the Cowboys as a free agent, initially placed on the practice squad. During his time with the Cowboys, Garrett learned from legends such as Troy Aikman and contributed to three Super Bowl victories in four years.
His playing career extended until 2004, with stints at the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins. After retiring, Garrett began his coaching journey as the quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins under head coach Nick Saban. He then returned to the Cowboys, taking on the role of offensive coordinator in 2007, before becoming the head coach in 2011.
Garrett led the Cowboys for nearly a decade, achieving an overall record of 85 wins and 67 losses, translating to a winning percentage of .559. Under his leadership, the team reached the playoffs in 2014, 2016, and 2018 but fell short of advancing past the divisional round. Following a disappointing 8-8 season in 2019, he was relieved of his duties.
In 2020, Garrett joined the Giants as their offensive coordinator, but his tenure was cut short in the middle of the 2021 season when he was dismissed. The decision by the Titans to interview Garrett comes as the franchise looks for a replacement for Brian Callahan, who was let go after Week 6 of the current season.
The Titans are conducting a thorough search to find a coach who can revitalize the team and lead them to success in the upcoming seasons. As they consider various candidates, Garrett’s extensive experience as both a player and a coach will be under scrutiny during the interview process. The organization aims to make a well-informed decision that aligns with its long-term objectives.
