18-Year-Old Arrested for Stolen Kia and Loaded Handgun in Lowell

BREAKING: An 18-year-old Lowell man, identified as Oziel Gomez, was arrested early Wednesday morning after police discovered him asleep behind the wheel of a stolen 2019 Kia Forte. The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. near Elm and Linden Streets, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Police were alerted when an officer spotted the idling vehicle with its headlights on and a moving blanket covering a smashed rear window. Suspicion arose as authorities noted a surge in reports of stolen Kia models in the area recently. A quick license plate check confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen by a 27-year-old Lowell woman.

Upon approaching the vehicle, police found Gomez inside. They noted that the steering column was “destroyed,” a common sign linked to the rising trend of Kia thefts. An officer pointed out that models from 2011 to 2022 are particularly targeted due to their lack of engine immobilizers, making them easy prey for thieves. Tutorials on social media platforms detail how to steal these vehicles using just a screwdriver and a USB cable.

Inside the car, police discovered a screwdriver in the driver’s side door. When questioned, Gomez claimed he received the vehicle from a friend but could not provide any contact information for that individual. He expressed surprise that the vehicle could be stolen, despite acknowledging the broken window.

A search revealed a backpack containing another screwdriver, a flashlight, and a loaded 9mm handgun with nine rounds in its magazine. After being read his Miranda rights, Gomez admitted to using the stolen vehicle for approximately two days and ultimately confessed he was “fully aware” it was stolen.

Gomez was arraigned in Lowell District Court before Judge John Coffey, where he was held without bail pending a 58A dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday. He faces multiple charges, including improper storage of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

The community is on alert as police emphasize the growing trend of Kia thefts, urging residents to remain vigilant. Authorities continue to investigate the case and monitor for further developments.
