UPDATE: A remarkable new exhibit, “Sunshine Cinema: Florida in Film,” opens today at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum in West Palm Beach. Featuring iconic movie memorabilia like Al Pacino’s shirt from “Scarface” and Tom Hanks’ spacesuit from “Apollo 13,” this exhibition promises a thrilling journey through Florida’s cinematic history.
The exhibit runs from November 14, 2023 to May 30, 2024, showcasing over 25 artifacts that trace a century of film production in the Sunshine State. This includes a wealth of costumes, props, and films that highlight the state’s unique role in Hollywood’s evolution.
Erica Grant, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s director of curatorial affairs, emphasizes, “We’ve packed in as much information as we could. It’s a lot, and I don’t know if we’ll ever get to put on a sequel to this show.” The exhibition features an impressive array of items, including Vin Diesel’s tank top from “2 Fast 2 Furious” and the sheriff uniform worn by Roy Scheider in “Jaws 2.”
“This exhibit is not just about the movies; it’s about the people, places, and legacies behind them,” says Jeremy Johnson, president and CEO of the Historical Society. The exhibit captures the essence of Florida as a backdrop for Hollywood storytelling, from the early silent films made in the 1910s to the impactful narratives of the present day.
The timeline includes pivotal moments such as the groundbreaking work of Richard Norman, who produced positive portrayals of Black actors during the segregation era. Clips from his 1926 film “The Flying Ace,” featuring an all-African American cast, will be screened, showcasing the profound influence of film on societal aspirations.
Tickets are priced at $12 for adults, while admission is free for guests aged 18 and younger. Visitors can interact with the display through touchscreens to create their own movie posters or scenes, enhancing the immersive experience.
For film enthusiasts and history buffs, this exhibit is a must-see. The “Sunshine Cinema” exhibit not only highlights the glamour of Hollywood but also confronts its history, including racial stereotypes in classic films, encouraging visitors to engage with these complexities.
