UPDATE: Bissap Baobab, the iconic live music venue at Mission and 18th streets, will close its doors on December 28, 2023, after 28 years of vibrant cultural contributions. Owner Marco Senghor announced the emotional decision via social media, stating, “Let us be clear: Baobab is NOT done. We are actively looking for a new home.”
The beloved establishment has served as a cornerstone for community gatherings, hosting countless weddings, birthdays, and cultural events. Senghor explained, “Sustaining such a large space has become too difficult in these times,” emphasizing the impact of economic pressures on the venue’s viability.
As they search for a new location, the community is invited to a farewell party on December 20. Additionally, Bissap Baobab will continue to host the popular Baobab Flying Night every Saturday at Muddy Waters Coffee & Lounge located at Valencia and 16th streets.
Bissap Baobab began its journey in the 1990s as a modest catering kitchen on 19th Street, evolving into a registered legacy business that celebrated West African cuisine and performances. However, the venue has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including noise complaints and a lengthy battle to secure a liquor license, which took nearly 10 months to obtain.
Senghor reflected on the venue’s tumultuous journey, stating, “We are searching, listening, and trusting that the Universe is already whispering our next address.” The owner previously dealt with personal struggles, including a legal battle that nearly closed the original restaurant, but he persevered to reopen at a new location in 2022.
The closing announcement has sparked an outpouring of support from the community, who have cherished the venue’s unique blend of cultures and flavors. As Senghor poignantly noted, “These walls have witnessed miracles and thousands of nights where cultures blended like spices in a Ceebu Jen pot.”
Stay tuned for updates on Bissap Baobab’s next steps and future events. The venue’s legacy continues, promising to bring the spirit of the community wherever it lands next.
