UPDATE: The body of 53-year-old Christopher Couch has been located following a tragic incident where he was swept away by floodwaters near Interstate 17 and Table Mesa Road. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) confirmed the devastating news on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, after a thorough search operation that lasted several days.
Authorities received a call on Sunday morning reporting a vehicle swept away in the Agua Fria River. Search crews, including lake patrol and aviation units, were mobilized immediately. A woman passenger was rescued during a hoist operation, but Couch could not be found at that time.
On Tuesday afternoon, MCSO announced they discovered Couch’s body approximately 1.25 miles downstream from where he was last seen. The search was initially suspended due to hazardous weather conditions but resumed on Monday as conditions improved.
Officials are urging the community to heed the dangers of moving water. In a statement, they emphasized,
“This incident is a powerful reminder of the danger of moving water—and the dedication of the men and women who respond when lives are on the line. ⚠️ Never attempt to cross flooded or flowing water. Stay aware. Stay safe.”
This tragedy underscores the severe risks associated with flooding, a concern heightened in recent weeks due to inclement weather across the region.
As search and rescue efforts continue, local officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant and to avoid any unnecessary risks when encountering flooded areas. The community is mourning the loss of Couch, and support is being extended to his family during this difficult time.
