Bulldogs Dominate Vassar Open Invitational, Launch Fencing Season

UPDATE: The Yale Bulldogs fencing teams have kicked off their season with a commanding performance at the Vassar Open Invitational, securing multiple decisive victories this past weekend. The men’s team opened their campaign with an impressive record of 5-0, sending a strong message to their rivals as they aim for glory in the upcoming season.

In a thrilling start, the Bulldogs triumphed over Drew University with a score of 21-6, followed by another 21-6 win against Stevens College. They continued their winning streak by defeating Lafayette College 19-8, Johns Hopkins University 18-9, and wrapping up the day with a final victory against Sacred Heart University 19-8.

Captain Jordan Silberzweig expressed his excitement, stating, “After months of preparation and long morning practices, we came in hungry to compete at a high level.” The men’s team not only showcased their skills but also demonstrated strong teamwork, crucial for their strategy heading into the Ivy League Championships in 2026.

Last season, the Bulldogs ended with an impressive record of 18-7 and will be looking to build on that success. The team features three returning NCAA Championship qualifiers: Tony Whelan, Silberzweig, and Castor Kao, currently ranked sixth in foil competition nationally.

Meanwhile, the women’s team also excelled, finishing with a record of 6-1 during their tournament. They achieved dominant wins over Yeshiva University (21-0) and Lafayette College (20-1), as well as victories against Tufts (18-9), Wagner (19-8), and Wellesley College (19-8). Their only loss came in a nail-biter against Cornell, falling just short at 13-14.

Captain Amanda O’Donnell emphasized the team’s potential, stating, “The past meet went well. We beat six teams, including Brown, which set a really good tone for the rest of the season.” The women’s team is bolstered by four incoming first-years who have competed at the World Championships, adding depth and skill to an already strong roster.

As both teams prepare for the upcoming Tri-State Shark Showcase on November 23, 2023, the Bulldogs are poised to build on their successful start. With a combination of experienced competitors and fresh talent, fans are eager to see how the season unfolds.
