UPDATE: In an electrifying showdown, the Camden Hills Windjammers clinched their first-ever state football championship with a decisive 52-26 victory over the Spruce Mountain Phoenix on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers showcased a powerful performance that solidified their place in school history.
Just days before the championship, senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm found extra motivation when new championship banners were hung in their gym, waiting for a date to be inscribed. “That needs to change,” he declared, and change it did as he led his team to victory.
Schwalm put on an offensive clinic, accumulating 32 points personally through rushing and passing touchdowns. His stellar performance included three rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass to Justin Batty, while also contributing two crucial conversion passes. “As long as I get the ball in his hands, something good is going to happen,” praised coach Chris Christie.
The Windjammers set the pace with an early lead, scoring an opening touchdown just minutes into the game. After a series of back-and-forth turnovers, Schwalm executed a stunning 67-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 16-6 before halftime. By the end of the second quarter, Camden Hills held a commanding 32-12 lead.
With the defense securing five turnovers, including two interceptions from Braden Beveridge, the Windjammers maintained their momentum throughout the game. “We played with utter heart, grit, and determination today,” Coach Christie declared post-game. The Windjammers ended their season with an impressive 10-1 record.
Schwalm’s performance not only secured the win but also highlighted the team’s resilience and evolution. The Camden Hills football program, which faced challenges in its early years, has grown significantly since becoming a full-fledged varsity team in 2009. “This is a special group,” Christie expressed, optimistic about the future of Camden Hills football.
The Windjammers’ victory marks a historic moment for the school, allowing them to finally etch their name on the championship banner that had long awaited a date. “We came in here confident; we were prepared and ready for it,” said Batty, reflecting on their journey from summer practices to this triumphant conclusion.
As the celebration continues, the Windjammers have not only claimed a title but also set a precedent for future teams, proving that with teamwork and determination, success is within reach. “The future looks pretty solid for us,” Coach Christie concluded, hinting at the potential for continued success in the coming years.
For the Spruce Mountain Phoenix, the season concludes with a record of 8-2. Despite the loss, both teams showcased incredible skill and sportsmanship, making this championship a memorable encounter.
