URGENT UPDATE: Chester has officially unveiled a statue honoring local hero Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title. The significant event took place on November 6, marking a proud moment for the community and celebrating a trailblazer who has inspired many.
The statue now stands prominently in the park across from Chester City Hall, located at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States. Mayor Stefan Roots praised Gibbs for her remarkable achievements in kickboxing, referring to her as “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.” He emphasized that her story is emblematic of the spirit of Chester—resilience, grit, and pride.
“Her story is the story of Chester itself,” Mayor Roots declared. “Fredia has shown us what’s possible when determination meets purpose.” With a professional martial arts career spanning three decades, Gibbs holds titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK, further solidifying her legacy.
This statue is not just a tribute; it’s a beacon of hope. “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it,” Roots stated. “It tells them no goal is too big.” He acknowledged the city’s ongoing pride in Gibbs’s achievements and her continuous efforts to pave the way for women in sports.
The statue had a previous unveiling at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs was celebrated as an All-American and leading basketball point scorer. Following the university’s closure, the statue was transferred to Villanova University, which graciously donated it to Chester.
“Wow, what a moment,” Gibbs expressed at the unveiling. “To stand here today, back here where it all began in Chester, it means everything to me.” Her emotional connection to the city was palpable as she reflected on her journey from a young girl with dreams to a world champion. “This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience,” she said, fighting back tears. “This city raised me, it taught me strength.”
Created by sculptor Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze in Chester, the statue serves as a lasting tribute to Gibbs’s impact on the community and the world of sports.
As Chester celebrates this monumental achievement, the legacy of Fredia Gibbs continues to inspire current and future generations. The unveiling is a reminder of the power of dreams and the importance of community support. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the statue and reflect on the achievements of this extraordinary champion.
The statue’s presence in Chester serves as a powerful reminder that greatness grows here, inspiring all who encounter it to pursue their own goals with tenacity and resilience.
