Cougars Dominate Citrus College 6-2 on Thrilling Sophomore Night

UPDATE: The College of the Canyons Cougars delivered a stunning performance, defeating Citrus College 6-2 on July 14, 2023, in a thrilling match that celebrated the team’s annual Sophomore Night. With this impressive victory, the Cougars improved their overall record to 5-11-3 and solidified their home record to 4-4-2 for the season.

The game, played on the Cougars’ home turf, began with a heartfelt ceremony honoring five standout sophomores: Diego Briseno, Steven Garcia, Juandiego Rodriguez, Jeffrey Contreras, and Leon Mikailian, recognizing their contributions over the past two seasons.

After a scoreless first half, the match erupted into action just after the break. In the 47th minute, Ivan Omana scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Andrew Sorto, putting the Cougars ahead 1-0. Moments later, Omana struck again in the 48th minute, extending the lead to 2-0 with help from Carlos Mendez.

Citrus College fought back, netting a goal in the 61st minute from Kevin Cardenas, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, Jeffrey Contreras responded swiftly, scoring his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute, increasing the Cougars’ lead to 3-1.

Despite the Owls’ attempts to stay competitive with Cardenas scoring again, making it 3-2, the Cougars unleashed a scoring frenzy. Juandiego Rodriguez tallied two goals in quick succession, in the 74th and 87th minutes, enhancing his season total to three goals. His first was assisted by Justin Assadi, while the second was set up by Leon Mikailian.

The Cougars sealed their victory with a final goal in the 90th minute by Mikailian, culminating in a decisive 6-2 triumph. COC goalkeeper Jonathan Mazon started the match, making two saves, while David Zendejas played the second half and earned the win, improving his record to 3-8.

The Cougars showcased a commanding performance with a season-high 26 shots, including 17 on goal, and earned nine corners during the match. In contrast, Citrus goaltender AJ Baragan recorded nine saves despite facing six goals.
