CT Man Convicted of Kidnapping, Robbery in Sneaker Deal Gone Wrong

URGENT UPDATE: A 24-year-old Meriden man has been convicted of first-degree kidnapping, robbery, and strangulation following a botched sneaker transaction. A jury at the New Britain Superior Court found Addison Clegg guilty in a shocking case that highlights the dangers of online transactions.

Court records reveal that during a meetup arranged through Facebook Marketplace, Clegg violently attacked the victim, strangling him until he lost consciousness. As the victim lay incapacitated, another accomplice seized his legally registered 9mm firearm and his vehicle, driving away while the victim remained trapped.

In a harrowing moment, the victim managed to regain consciousness and bravely escaped from the moving vehicle on Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill, suffering serious injuries, including a broken foot during his escape. The quick thinking of the victim was crucial in preventing a potentially more tragic outcome.

Judge Chris Pelosi has scheduled Clegg’s sentencing for March 25. Prosecutors praised the victim’s bravery, stating,

“But for his quick thinking under terrifying conditions, allowing him to escape from his abductors, who knows how this violent encounter would have ended?”

New Britain State’s Attorney Christian M. Watson commended the efforts of local law enforcement, specifically recognizing the Rocky Hill and Middletown police departments, including Detectives Patrick Lehane, Thomas Ganley, and Officer Brandon Caires for their thorough investigative work. He also extended gratitude to the medical staff at Hartford Hospital for their critical care and the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection for their professional analysis.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online transactions. Authorities urge individuals to remain vigilant and cautious when engaging in any meetups for buying or selling goods. Stay tuned for further updates as sentencing approaches, and as more details emerge regarding this alarming incident.
