UPDATE: A police chase in New Garden Township has ended tragically with three fatalities after a vehicle crashed into a tree just after 1:21 a.m. today. The pursuit began in Avondale Borough when Pennsylvania State Police attempted to pull over a vehicle that was observed committing multiple traffic violations.
According to authorities, the vehicle failed to stop, leading to a chase that extended approximately 3.3 miles southbound on Route 41, also known as Pennsylvania Avenue. The vehicle ultimately crashed into a barren tree just past Sunny Dell Road. All three individuals in the vehicle—one driver and two passengers—were pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the pursuit.
“This is a tragedy,” stated Mayor Susan Rzucidlo of Avondale. “Lives were lost. We send our condolences to the families. It is heartbreaking.” The identities of the deceased have not yet been released as officials work to notify next of kin.
The incident occurred less than two miles from the Delaware state line, near Hockessin. In response to the crash, the Troop J Major Case Team has been activated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the chase and crash.
