Fairport’s Yomar Castellano Named Player of the Year; Coaches Honored

URGENT UPDATE: Fairport’s standout player, Yomar Castellano, has just been named the Division VII Northeast Lakes district player of the year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association in an announcement made on March 3, 2026. This prestigious honor highlights Castellano’s exceptional performance this season, where he led his team with an impressive average of 19.1 points, alongside 3.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.4 steals per game.

Castellano’s recognition comes as Fairport boasts a remarkable season with a record of 21-2 and a critical district final matchup scheduled for March 7. His leadership has been pivotal, making him one of five players on the Skippers averaging double figures this season. The team’s only losses have been to Riverside and Glenville, underscoring their dominance.

In addition to Castellano’s accolade, Fairport’s coach, Dustin Ettinger, has been awarded the title of D-VII coach of the year. This marks a significant achievement as he joins three other local coaches who have received similar honors. Notably, Josh Jakacki from Kenston, who led the Bombers to a 20-3 record and a mid-season 14-game win streak, has also been recognized.

The coaching accolades continue with David Bargar of Chagrin Falls, who shares the Division V coach of the year honor with Jeff Holzhauer of Keystone. Under Bargar’s guidance, the Tigers transformed from a 3-4 start to a staggering 16-game win streak, now holding the second seed in Division V. Their defensive strategy has been exceptional, limiting opponents to an average of 46.9 points per game.

Another notable recognition goes to Kirtland’s Shawn McGregor, who has been named coach of the year in Division VI. The Hornets, with a record of 20-3, are coming off a strong season that included a state semifinal appearance last year.

The all-district teams also highlight several other standout players from the area. In Division I, Mentor’s Jack Kennedy and Tony Katava earned first and second team honors, respectively. Meanwhile, Euclid’s Mekhi Asberry and Kye Owens were recognized on the first team in Division II, with their teammate DJ Jenkins receiving second-team honors.

Division III saw significant representation, with Hawken’s Prince Williams and Geneva’s Caden Proy earning first-team recognitions. Chardon’s Luke Galfidi and Kenton’s Kahlil Hinton made the second team, while the third team featured Jaevon Henderson of VASJ and others.

In Division IV, NDCL’s Brendan Hernan and Benedictine’s Steph Bohanon were named to the first team. Chagrin Falls also had three players recognized in Division V, including Harrison Horvath, who made the second team.
