Father and Daughter Die in Tragic Ocean Incident at Big Sur

UPDATE: The body of the 7-year-old girl swept out to sea by a powerful wave at Garrapata State Beach has been recovered. Authorities confirmed at approximately 1:20 p.m. on July 16, 2023, that a diver located her body about 100 yards offshore, half a mile from her last known location. Initial reports mistakenly identified her as 5 years old; family members later clarified her age.

This tragic incident unfolded on July 14 when 39-year-old Yuji Hu from Calgary, Alberta attempted to save his daughter, who was caught by a large wave. Both were pulled into the ocean as Hu bravely tried to rescue her. The girl’s mother was also swept into the water, but she managed to return to shore.

Witnesses reported seeing a family in distress around 1 p.m. Friday, prompting an off-duty California State Parks officer to assist. The officer rescued Hu from the water and immediately began administering CPR. Both were transported to a local hospital, where Hu was pronounced dead. The mother is currently stable, suffering from mild hypothermia.

A multi-agency search effort involving the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks, Cal Fire, and the U.S. Coast Guard commenced immediately. However, the search for the girl was suspended Saturday night, although California State Parks will maintain personnel for continued shoreline searches.

Authorities emphasized the dangers posed by large waves in the area, urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution. As this heartbreaking story develops, families are reminded of the unpredictable nature of ocean conditions.

The community mourns the loss of Hu and his daughter, emphasizing the emotional toll this incident has had. As we await further updates, our thoughts remain with the family during this devastating time.
