James Gallagher Announces Candidacy for Full Term in Congress

State Assemblyman James Gallagher has officially declared his candidacy for a full two-year term in California’s 1st Congressional District, following the death of former Representative Doug LaMalfa on January 6, 2023. Gallagher is set to file his candidacy paperwork on Friday, entering a competitive race in a district that has been significantly redrawn.

Gallagher, a Republican from Yuba City, has a strong track record in local politics, having won all six of his races for the District 3 Assembly seat with at least 60% of the vote. However, the congressional race presents a tougher challenge due to the changes implemented by Proposition 50, which has shifted the electoral landscape in favor of Democrats.

The special election to complete LaMalfa’s term will take place under the old district lines, providing a different context for candidates. Gallagher will face off against multiple candidates in both the special and regular elections, including State Senator Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) and Chico Democrat Audrey Denney. As of Thursday afternoon, additional Democratic candidates such as James Brock, James Salegui, Casey Stewart, Angelita Valles, and Kyle Wilson have also expressed their intentions to run for the two-year term.

The deadline for candidates to file their nominations is approaching quickly, as Gallagher aims to establish a long-term presence in Washington. His campaign is expected to gain momentum in the coming weeks as he seeks to consolidate support within the Republican base, while also appealing to a broader electorate in the newly drawn district.

The upcoming elections will not only determine LaMalfa’s successor but also shape the political landscape of California, particularly in the context of shifting voter demographics and party affiliations. As candidates gear up for the campaigns, their strategies and outreach efforts will be closely watched by political analysts and constituents alike.
