UPDATE: Acclaimed Michigan actor Jeff Daniels is set to open a new dining destination, JD’s Stage Bistro, just blocks from his celebrated Purple Rose Theatre in downtown Chelsea. This exciting venture is currently under construction at 117 1/2 S. Main St., with an anticipated opening in Spring 2026.
The bistro will boast a seating capacity of 100 and will feature a state-of-the-art wood-fired pizza oven, a vibrant cocktail bar, and inviting patio seating. Notably, the venue will also offer private event spaces tailored for “small to mid-sized community gatherings and private celebrations,” according to the restaurant’s official website.
Leading the culinary team is Chef Nate Wegryn, who aims to craft an inspired contemporary menu that emphasizes local ingredients sourced from nearby farmers and suppliers. Chef Wegryn has an impressive background, having previously worked at Echelon Kitchen in Ann Arbor and The Dixboro Project, which was recognized as one of the top new restaurants in 2022 by the Free Press.
JD’s Stage Bistro is being developed in partnership with Tannin Property Group, a Chelsea-based business with a strong community presence since 2005. The Daniels family, including Jeff’s son Ben and wife Amanda, is collaborating closely with Tannin to realize their vision of creating a world-class music venue. The bistro aims to attract local, regional, and nationally recognized singer-songwriters, setting a new standard for sound quality in the area.
This new establishment is strategically located near popular local spots such as the Chelsea Bakery and across from The Common Grill. The vibrant area is poised for a culinary renaissance, with Tannin Property Group’s involvement in recent renovations, including the transformation of the old Flint law offices into the new home for Serendipity Bookstore.
