Local Man Honors Late Father with Spectacular Holiday Display

UPDATE: A heartfelt tribute is lighting up Westlake as Timothy Newsome transforms his yard into a dazzling holiday spectacle, honoring his late father’s legacy. With over 8,080 light bulbs and 253 plastic figurines, Newsome is ensuring that the cherished Christmas tradition continues, just in time for the holiday season.

In an emotional display of love, Newsome, who lost his father, Eddie JLP Newsome, on May 5, 2024, has taken on the mantle of holiday decorator, a role his father held for decades. “I want to keep the magic alive,” Newsome stated, reflecting on the importance of this annual ritual. “This was something that was so special between me and my dad.”

The impressive setup, dubbed “Newsome’s Old Fashioned Christmas Lights,” takes about two weeks to complete, with 70 strings of lights and 233 extension cords meticulously arranged. Newsome has also added unique photo opportunities, including cutouts for families to capture their holiday memories against the festive backdrop.

“This year’s display features new wooden nutcrackers made by Sulphur Ag students,” Newsome said. “Dad always enjoyed switching up the setup, and I continue that tradition.” The display has become a local attraction, with visitors traveling from afar to witness the iconic lights.

As the community embraces the festive spirit, Newsome’s neighbors have joined in, enhancing the display by allowing him to extend his decorations into their yards. “Their support has been incredible,” he noted, highlighting the sense of community that surrounds this festive endeavor.

“I keep an empty chair outside in honor of my father,” Newsome shared. “I know he’s still there with me.” His commitment to keeping the family tradition alive not only honors his father’s memory but also brings joy to countless onlookers.

Visitors can expect to see the stunning display at 2709 Arthur St., Westlake, where Newsome strives to create an experience filled with joy and nostalgia. “I hope passers-by enjoy them as much as my father and I have all these years,” he concluded.

This holiday season, Newsome’s lights shine brighter than ever, a beacon of love and remembrance that invites everyone to share in the joy of the season. As the display continues to grow, it serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds of family and the spirit of Christmas.
