UPDATE: Lynnfield community members gathered on November 7, 2023, to honor local veterans at the Veterans Memorial in Lynnfield Common, marking a poignant Veterans Day ceremony filled with powerful tributes and personal reflections.
Veterans Agent Bruce Siegel emceed the event, which drew an engaged crowd of residents. Select Board Chairman Phil Crawford delivered an impactful address, quoting poet G.K. Chesterton on the meaning of courage and the shared bond of all veterans: their unwavering commitment to freedom. “Whether they serve in a time of peace or of war, all American veterans share a common bond,” Crawford stated.
The ceremony featured retired Army Captain David Gallo, a Lynnfield native and guest of honor, who shared his harrowing experiences as a soldier in Desert Storm. Gallo reflected on the profound influence of local veterans, particularly highlighting Lauren Lengyel, a U.S. Air Force captain and Vietnam POW, whose bravery inspired him during his own service.
Gallo recounted how, as he prepared for retirement, he reached out to Lengyel via email, expressing gratitude for his inspiration during challenging times. “It was a true honor coming from a hero like that,” Gallo said, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.
“The families aren’t always so lucky,” Gallo noted, sharing the emotional toll on loved ones left at home. “I remember my own wife being much more nervous about me going off to war than I was.” His heartfelt message underscored the importance of community support for military families.
Gallo concluded by stressing that how veterans are treated today affects the willingness of future generations to serve. “This has a direct impact on the security of our country and its people today and every day,” he asserted. The audience responded with applause, reflecting the community’s commitment to honoring its heroes.
