Man Charged in Family Massacre Seeks Venue Change Ahead of Trial

UPDATE: Austin Robert Drummond, the man accused of murdering four family members connected to an abandoned infant, has pleaded not guilty and is seeking a change of venue for his upcoming trial. During a court appearance on November 10, 2023, Drummond’s attorney, Bryan Huffman, informed Judge Mark Hayes that pre-trial publicity could hinder the selection of an unbiased jury in Lake County, Tennessee.

The shocking killings occurred on July 29, 2023, in Tiptonville, a small community that was thrown into chaos as authorities launched a week-long manhunt for Drummond. He was arrested on August 5 in Jackson, approximately 70 miles from the crime scene, where he was found unarmed but in possession of several firearms, the origins of which remain unclear. Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the death penalty if he is convicted of first-degree murder.

Drummond, who appeared in court wearing orange jail attire and shackles, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and multiple weapons offenses. His alleged victims include the infant’s parents, James M. Wilson, 21, and Adrianna Williams, 20; her brother, Braydon Williams, 15; and their mother, Cortney Rose, 38.

The infant was discovered abandoned in a car seat, dropped off at a stranger’s home approximately 40 miles from the murder site. Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box confirmed that the baby is “safe, healthy and being well taken care of.”

The case has sent shockwaves through rural Tennessee, where local residents are grappling with the aftermath of such a brutal crime. During the manhunt, multiple individuals were arrested for allegedly assisting Drummond.

FBI evidence presented at a recent hearing connected Drummond’s cell phone to the area where the victims’ bodies were found, but Huffman contends that there is insufficient proof that Drummond was the shooter.

A trial date has yet to be set, but the implications of this case are significant. With a community still reeling from the violence, and heightened media attention, the request for a change of venue underscores the complex legal landscape ahead. The upcoming proceedings will be pivotal not only for Drummond but for the community that seeks justice for the tragic loss of life.

As the case develops, many are left wondering what the future holds for this small Tennessee town and the family forever altered by this tragedy. Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
