Man Fires Gun After Asking for Money, Faces Serious Charges

UPDATE: A man is facing serious charges after allegedly firing a gun during a confrontation over money at a residence on Inalahan Highway early Monday morning. Jordan Michael Babauta, 34, was charged with terrorizing, a third-degree felony, with a special allegation for the use of a deadly weapon.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on October 23, police responded to a distress call from a home where the victim reported a shocking incident. The man, who was having breakfast outdoors, stated that Babauta approached him asking for money. The two had only met once before, three years earlier, when the victim assisted Babauta after his car ran out of gas.

Tensions escalated quickly when a woman cooking breakfast intervened, telling Babauta he needed to leave the property. In response, Babauta allegedly adopted a fighting stance, prompting the victim to punch him in self-defense. According to the magistrate’s complaint, Babauta then drew a gun, threatened to kill the victim, and fired a shot just inches from the couple’s feet before leaving the scene in his vehicle.

Authorities arrested Babauta on Wednesday, and during questioning, he denied threatening anyone. If convicted, he could face up to 28 years in prison. He is currently being held on $5,000 cash bail.

This incident raises serious concerns about public safety and the potential for violence in seemingly ordinary interactions. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to local authorities.

As this case develops, it highlights the urgent need for discussion around gun safety and conflict resolution strategies. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
