UPDATE: Metropolitan Ministries has just announced the opening of its annual holiday tents on Monday, November 6, 2023, to provide crucial support for families in need across the Tampa Bay area. With the number of families seeking food assistance doubling, the organization urgently needs more volunteers to meet the escalating demand.
Officials attribute this surge in need to soaring housing costs, ongoing financial struggles from the pandemic, the impact of recent hurricanes, and the current government shutdown. “Families will receive a whole turkey along with supplies, and as Christmas approaches, we’ll also provide toys for their kids,” stated Christine Long, Executive Vice President and Chief Programs Officer of Metropolitan Ministries.
The holiday tent season marks a vital opportunity for struggling families to access essential resources. “It’s a chance for families to meet their basic needs and fill their holiday with hope and love,” Long emphasized. The tents will open for donations and assistance across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties starting on Monday.
Metropolitan Ministries is gearing up to mobilize an impressive 15,000 volunteers, distribute 1 million pounds of food, and provide 60,000 toys and gift cards, all thanks to generous donors and community partners. However, the organization warns that registration slots for assistance are filling up quickly. “Registering ahead of time is critical. In fact, we only have a couple more days left for Thanksgiving slots,” Long added.
Families can register for assistance either in person or through the Metropolitan Ministries website, where they can find additional information and resources. This initiative is crucial as it not only addresses immediate food insecurity but also aims to uplift the spirits of families during the holiday season.
With community support and collaboration, Metropolitan Ministries is committed to making this holiday season a brighter one for families in Tampa Bay. Stay tuned for more updates as we follow this significant outreach effort.
