UPDATE: The Midland Public Schools Board of Education is set to make a pivotal decision regarding Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson at their meeting on Monday, December 15, 2023, at 7 p.m. This urgent session will take place at the MPS administration center located at 600 East Carpenter.
The board will enter a closed session under the Open Meetings Act to evaluate Miller-Nelson’s performance. Following this critical evaluation, they will return to open session to cast votes on her evaluation and the potential renewal of her contract. This decision is crucial for the leadership stability of Midland Public Schools and could significantly impact the district’s future direction.
In addition to the superintendent’s evaluation, the board’s agenda includes several key updates and decisions. Highlights include presentations from the Shining Stars program, the Superintendent Student Advisory Team, and an update on high school athletics. Board President Phil Rausch will also provide updates on strategic and facility planning.
The board will discuss the proposed sale of a vacant property at 2900 Dauer Street to Midland County Habitat for Humanity for $250,000. This site, previously home to Ashman School and later known as the Franklin Center, has received Planning Commission approval for the construction of 14 single-family homes. Notably, these homes will be built by students participating in the MPS building trades program, providing hands-on experience and community benefit.
The board will also address significant donations totaling $27,800 to support school programs, further showcasing community support for education.
After this pivotal meeting, the board’s next gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., where they will hold an organizational meeting for the new term.
As the Midland community awaits the outcome of this meeting, the decisions made could have lasting implications for the school district. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
