UPDATE: The Town of Nahant is actively pursuing the establishment of a new public-safety building, a project that could significantly impact local emergency services. Town Administrator Alison Nieto announced that a feasibility study is underway, with the aim of creating a unified space for both the police and fire departments.
During a recent update, Nieto revealed that the Town has awarded a contract to Context Architecture after reviewing four proposals submitted for the feasibility study. The firm has been engaged since October 2023 and is currently conducting a thorough space-needs analysis of the existing police and fire stations.
According to Nieto, both facilities are in dire need of renovation. “The holding cells in the police station are non-compliant with state regulations, and the space is insufficient for our staff,” she stated. The feasibility study will determine whether to renovate the current buildings, construct new ones, or merge them into a single public-safety complex.
The study involves evaluating several potential sites for the new building, including locations near the Department of Public Works, behind the current police station, near the Nahant Country Club, and the existing fire station, which is currently situated in a flood zone. “We are assessing logistical considerations for where the Town would want either station or a combined building to be located,” Nieto explained.
The urgency of this project is underscored by the need for improved facilities for local emergency responders. Both Fire Chief Austin Antrim and Police Chief Timothy Furlong have been deeply involved in the analysis process, contributing valuable insights during the walkthroughs with Context Architecture. “This is a crucial process for our community,” Nieto emphasized, highlighting the importance of adequate infrastructure for public safety.
The feasibility study aims to produce a comprehensive plan by the end of the analysis phase, which will be presented at the upcoming Town Meeting for community input and decision-making.
As this project progresses, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged. The outcome of this feasibility study could reshape public safety in Nahant, ensuring that both the police and fire departments are equipped to serve the community effectively.
Stay tuned for further developments on this pressing issue, as Nahant prioritizes the safety and well-being of its residents.
