Poquoson Dominates Southampton 42-6 in Semifinal Showdown

UPDATE: The Poquoson Islanders delivered a stunning performance on November 10, 2023, overpowering the Southampton Indians with a decisive 42-6 victory in the Class 2 Region A semifinals held at Poquoson Middle School. The Islanders showcased their dominance on the ground, accumulating a staggering 429 rushing yards without attempting a single pass.

This emphatic win propels Poquoson (11-1) into a highly anticipated clash against top-seeded Armstrong (12-0) in the regional finals, scheduled to take place on the Wildcats’ home turf in Richmond. The Islanders aim to secure their fourth consecutive region title after a strong season.

Despite high expectations for Southampton (7-5) and their standout quarterback Zayden Pope, who has thrown for over 2,000 yards this season, the game quickly tilted in favor of Poquoson. The Islanders’ defense initially stifled Southampton’s passing game, allowing only 150 total yards and managing to sack Pope five times throughout the match.

Poquoson struck first, with running back Austin Conley sprinting 39 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, setting the tone for the game. The Islanders capitalized on an interception by Dom Galacgac, scoring again to extend their lead to 14-0 shortly after.

The Islanders’ relentless rushing attack continued to dominate, with Galacgac himself scoring another touchdown following a fumble recovery deep in Southampton territory, pushing the score to 21-0 with just over ten minutes left in the first half. Southampton managed to find the end zone with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Miguel Bradshaw to Qmarai Allen, reducing the deficit to 21-6.

However, Poquoson quickly responded, exploiting a penalty against Southampton to set up a short field for another score, as Galacgac rushed for a 21-yard touchdown to end the first half at 28-6. The Islanders’ defense, led by players like Brayden Agnese and Carter Jones, consistently pressured Pope, limiting his effectiveness and forcing mistakes.

The second half continued the Islanders’ offensive onslaught, with Conley dashing for a 62-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, followed by another five-yard touchdown run just moments later. This swift series of scores not only solidified Poquoson’s commanding lead but also initiated a running clock due to the significant point margin.

Poquoson coach Elliott Duty praised his team’s execution, highlighting the offensive line and tight ends for their crucial blocking. He noted, “We gave up a couple of plays, but to limit a team like that to one big play, I think we did OK.”

As the Islanders prepare for the championship showdown against Armstrong next week, they remain focused on their goal of continuing their regional dominance. Fans and players alike are eager for what promises to be an electrifying matchup as Poquoson aims to extend their winning streak and claim another title.

Stay tuned for updates as the Poquoson Islanders look to maintain their momentum in the upcoming finals.
