UPDATE: Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts (NCM) hosted a powerful rally in Ayer, Massachusetts, honoring the legacy of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. This event marked the 39th Annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, a significant milestone and the first since President Carter’s passing.
Throughout the week, thousands of volunteers nationwide united to advance Habitat’s mission of affordable homeownership, showcasing the profound impact of community service. The rally highlighted the Carters’ enduring commitment to building homes and hope for families across the globe.
The inaugural Carter Work Project took place in 1984 in New York City, where the Carters helped renovate a six-story apartment building, creating affordable housing for local families. This impactful legacy was recently honored with the renaming of East 6th Street between Avenues C & D to Jimmy Carter Way.
During the Ayer event, Habitat NCM hosted a special luncheon attended by students, volunteers, and local officials. Executive Director Carolyn Read expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of all involved. “We honor the Carters, whose lives embody Habitat’s mission of building strength and stability through shelter,” she said.
“Building a home is about more than wood and nails — it’s about creating hope, dignity, and belonging,” Read added, emphasizing the Carters’ lifelong dedication to service.
The week-long rally not only celebrated the Carters’ legacy but also served as a reminder of the vital work Habitat for Humanity NCM is doing in the community. The organization offers a hand up to low-income families, providing assistance in achieving affordable homeownership through volunteer labor and donations.
As part of their ongoing mission, Habitat NCM operates the Leominster ReStore, which raises funds to support their projects. The ReStore is set to relocate to a new location at 650 North Main St., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for December 11. Until then, it remains open at 637 Lancaster St. through the end of November.
This rally marks a pivotal moment for Habitat for Humanity NCM, as they continue to embody the Carters’ spirit of compassion and community service. With the holiday season approaching, families are poised to benefit from the work being done, ensuring they have a place to call home.
As the legacy of President and Mrs. Carter lives on, Habitat for Humanity NCM remains committed to making a difference, one home at a time.
