Blaney was a prominent figure in the Methodist community and an esteemed professor at the University of the Pacific. He received his Master of Divinity and Doctorate in Theology from Boston University School of Theology after studying in Mexico, Geneva, and Berlin. His ministry began in 1958 in Southern California, where he served as pastor of the Brentwood and Los Feliz Methodist Churches in Los Angeles.
After transitioning to academia, Blaney dedicated 30 years to teaching at the University of the Pacific. He led courses on vital topics such as Social Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, and Human Sexuality. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as he organized educational tours across Europe, focusing on the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the intersection of Christianity and Communism before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Throughout his career, Blaney was a staunch advocate for social justice, supporting causes for farmworkers, the LGBTQ community, and other oppressed minorities. He played a crucial role in establishing the Council of Bishops’ Scholarship Program alongside Bishop Talbert and served on multiple committees, including the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.
After retiring in 1996, Blaney and his wife, Laurel, moved to the Santa Cruz area. There, he remained active with the Aptos United Methodist Church and chaired ecumenical retreats for retired clergy. His legacy of compassion and advocacy continues to resonate within the community.
Blaney is survived by his beloved wife Laurel, daughters Martha and Joy, and grandchildren David, Elizabeth, and Isabella. He and Laurel shared over 63 years of marriage, having first met in Maine. His peaceful passing occurred at home, surrounded by family.
